Director's Message

I am delighted to welcome everyone to the newly launched website of our Institute. Through this platform, we hope that our clients, well-wishers, and society at large will have greater opportunities to learn about our activities and contributions. As a premier R&D institute under the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), established in 1961, we have consistently strived to fulfill our mandate and mission by providing impactful R&D outputs for the development of the North East Region and the nation as a whole. The Institute has been actively engaged in multidisciplinary research, with a strong focus on fostering connections with industry, academia, and the society. It has continuously performed its assigned responsibilities to the best of its capabilities. Over the years, the Institute has developed expertise in the areas like natural products chemistry, drugs and drug intermediates, VSK cement technology, agro-technologies, petrochemicals, crude-oil transportations, paper and paper products, beneficiation chemicals, ecology and environment studies, geotechnical investigations, foundation design engineering, soil investigation and building materials including testing & analysis, etc. The Institute also generated more than 150 technologies of which a large number of Micro, Small and Medium (MSM) technologies were commercially successful which helped in setting up of various industries throughout the country. On the basis of the technologies developed, CSIR-NEIST bagged CSIR-Technology Award continuously for four years from 2010 to 2013, FICCI Award in 1982 & 1985 for development of technologies and rural development activities, NRDC Awards in 1972, 1984 & 1985 for development of process technologies, SIDC Award in 1987 for technologies on specialty papers, Industrial Promotion Board Award for small scale sector in 1988, to name a few. As a key player in Science and Technology in the North East Region, the Institute is committed to achieving higher standards in research and development. We actively promote the translation of laboratory innovations to real-world applications, contribute to the development of skilled scientific and technical manpower, foster entrepreneurship, and strengthen collaborations with academic institutes, industries and its various stakeholders. Besides its R&D priorities, CSIR-NEIST is doing well in the CSIR Jigyasa Programme which is an outreach programme for the school students, wherein the schools are virtually as well as physically connected to the lab and the scientists to inculcate a scientific temperament among the young minds and budding talents. In this decade, when the country is heading towards Industry 5.0, integration of our traditional knowledgebase with modern S&T through the intervention of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) is the demand of the hour. The institute is expanding in a big way in the area of AI/ML research and its application in the conventional R&D approaches of the institute are being examined, tried and tested, and the results are encouraging. CSIR-NEIST is fostering activities through computation modelling, data sciences approach and state-of-the-art technologies such as AI/ML, etc. Major activities include development of open source software for drug discovery, databases for conservation of bioresources, and predictive models in areas of cheminformatics, bioinformatics, geological sciences, materials, petroleum research etc. CSIR-NEIST also endeavours to venture into futuristic game-changing areas of R&D of global importance in the near future such as Geological Hydrogen as a source of clean or green fuel and to ensure energy security of the country. The success of this project could mean a niche opportunity for the hydrocarbon exploration industry, especially in North East Region. Progress and change are constant, and at CSIR-NEIST, we embrace them with enthusiasm. The launch of our new website is one such step toward becoming more accessible and engaging for society. The homepage offers a comprehensive overview of the institute through a well-structured layout, making the site faster, easier to navigate, and more user-friendly. We are committed to continuously providing visitors with up-to-date information while sharing our knowledge and expertise in the field of Science and Technology. The “Research Highlights” section features recently published research articles that will benefit the scientific community. Visitors can also stay informed about the upcoming events of the institute and connect with us through platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Additionally, users can explore our R&D facilities, outputs, technologies, testing and analytical services, campus details, and reach out to us for queries or feedback. We hope you find our new website informative, resourceful, and enriching.
