Rumex vesicarius L.

It is commonly known as Chooka and belongs to the Polygonaceae family. Leaves are cooked with pulses or sometimes eaten fresh and also prepared as papad. 2-pyrrolidone-5-carboxylic acid, Vitamin E, 7-Tetradecanal are some of the bioactive compounds present in this plant. Methanolic extract of R. vesicarius contains many bioactive phytochemicals and appear to have cytotoxic and antioxidant activity against MCF-7 & WRL68 Cell line.

ExtractAnticancerTreatment of HCC group with R. vesicarius extract elicited significant reduction in serum AST, ALT, ALP and γ-GT activity relative to the untreated HCC group.AST, ALT, ALP, and γ-GT[3]
Methanolic extract HepatoprotectiveHepatoprotective effect of methanolic extract of R. vasicarius (MERV) was studied against the CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity and found the potential hepatoprotective activity of Rumex against hepatic injury produced by CCl4 in Wistar albino rats. The toxicity level was estimated by biochemical markers like AST, ALT, and ALP levels in serum; LPO and GSH levels in liver; and histopathological studies of liver tissues.AST, ALT, ALP, LPO, and GSH[4]
Methanolic extract Anti-inflammatoryThe methanolic extract showed anti-inflammatory activity in vitro by inhibiting protein denaturation at different concentration in Human red blood cell (HRBC) membrane stabilization method. [5]
