Phaseolus vulgaris L.

French bean is a leguminous vegetable belonging to the family Fabaceae. It is a good source of carotenoids and flavonoids such as lutein, β- carotene, kaempferol and quercetin. French bean shows anti-tumor and anti-proliferative properties by increasing pro-apoptotic proteins like Bax and activating caspase-3 enzymes leading to apoptosis.

  • Mainly utilized for vegetable in unshelled condition or as pulse in the shelled condition.
  • The green pod shells are reported to contain traces of a cyanogenetic glycoside and an unidentified substance which reduces the blood sugar level.
  • They are useful as a diuretic, especially in kidney and heart ailments and as adjuvant in mild case of diarrhoea.
