Syzygium jambos
Rose apple or Bogi Jamuk in Assamese is a popular fruit with many other names in India and is available in many states of the country. It is available during the months April-June. The fruit is glossy, yellowish white in appearance, thin epicarp and shallow in the inside with a round brown seed which can move in the shallow space inside the fruit. The fruit is very tasty with a mildly sweet taste and a good aroma. It is eaten raw when ripe and turns bright yellow in colour. The fruit is known to be rich in vitamin C and tannins. Various reports and researches have proved that it has many immune modulating properties, although the fruit is used as traditional medicine for the treatment of various illness and diseases. The fruit is composed of many bioactive compounds such as terpenoids, flavones, jambone and so on. All of these bioactive compounds contribute to exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities helping the immune system of our body. |
